Dr Kris brings more than 12 years of clinical experience to every male hair restoration programme at Kriniko Medical Aesthetics. Rather than selling a one-size-fits-all package, he looks for the cause of your hair loss first, then builds a plan around your scalp, your stage of hair loss and your goals.

  • A medical understanding of hair biology, hormones and scalp health, so treatment targets the reasons your hair is thinning, not just the symptoms.
  • Advanced training in regenerative and injectable treatments, including growth factor therapy, polynucleotides and scalp microneedling.
  • Every patient has a face-to-face consultation and digital scalp assessment with Dr Kris, with honest advice on what treatment can and cannot achieve.

Common Types of Hair Loss in Men

Male hair loss affects men of all ages and can start as early as your twenties. The earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the more existing hair can usually be preserved.

The Science of Hair Growth

Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle

Every hair on your scalp moves through a repeating cycle. When that cycle is disrupted, hairs grow for less time, become finer and shed more often, which leads to gradual thinning.

  • Anagen: the growth phaseActive hair growth that normally lasts several years.
  • Catagen: the transition phaseA short phase where growth slows and the follicle begins to shrink.
  • Telogen: the resting phaseThe hair rests before it is naturally released.
  • Exogen: the shedding phaseOld hairs are shed as new hairs begin to emerge.

In male pattern hair loss, the growth phase gets shorter with each cycle, so hairs become progressively thinner and weaker. Our treatments aim to support the growth phase and strengthen follicles before they are lost.

Diagnosis Before Treatment

Advanced Hair & Scalp Assessment Using the Dino-Lite Hair Scanner

Effective hair restoration starts with an accurate diagnosis. At Kriniko Medical Aesthetics, Dr Kris uses the Dino-Lite digital hair scanner to examine your scalp and follicles under high magnification, revealing detail the naked eye can't see.

  • Follicle and hair shaft analysis: identifies miniaturised follicles, variation in hair thickness and early signs of pattern hair loss.
  • Scalp health check: assesses dryness, inflammation, build-up and other scalp conditions that can hold back healthy growth.
  • Measurable progress: digital images recorded at your first visit give a clear baseline, so improvements in density can be tracked throughout your programme.

Staging Your Hair Loss

Understanding the Norwood Scale for Male Pattern Hair Loss

The Norwood scale is the standard way of classifying male pattern hair loss, from stage 1 (no significant loss) to stage 7 (extensive loss). Knowing your stage helps Dr Kris recommend the right treatment and set honest expectations.

Early stages (Norwood 1–2)

Little or slight recession at the temples. This is the ideal time to act, as regenerative treatments can help protect and strengthen follicles before significant loss occurs.

Moderate stages (Norwood 3–4)

A deeper receding hairline, often with thinning at the crown. Combination programmes can improve density, slow progression and support weakened follicles.

Advanced stages (Norwood 5–7)

Larger areas of loss across the top of the scalp. Treatment focuses on preserving and thickening remaining hair, and Dr Kris will advise honestly if another route, such as a surgical opinion, may suit you better.

Growth Factor Hair Treatment Cambridge

Growth factor therapy uses your body's own natural growth factors to stimulate hair follicles and encourage healthier hair growth. A small blood sample is taken and processed in a centrifuge to isolate concentrated platelets and growth factors.

These are then carefully injected into the thinning areas of your scalp to improve follicle activity, circulation and hair density. Because the treatment uses your own blood, it is a natural, well-tolerated option for many men.

Advanced Growth Factor Hair Restoration

Advanced Growth Factor Hair Restoration is a next-generation regenerative treatment that provides a slower, more sustained release of growth factors than standard growth factor therapy.

Using a specialised centrifuge protocol, the concentrate contains fibrin, white blood cells and platelets, forming a natural matrix that supports longer-lasting follicle stimulation and scalp regeneration. It is a popular choice for men with progressive thinning.

Microneedling for Hair Loss

Scalp microneedling creates controlled micro-channels in the skin to stimulate collagen production, boost circulation and trigger the scalp's natural repair response.

It also improves the absorption of topical hair growth treatments, which is why it is frequently combined with growth factor therapy, Advanced Growth Factor Hair Restoration or topical therapies for enhanced results.

Dr. CYJ Hair Filler Cambridge

Dr. CYJ Hair Filler is an injectable scalp treatment formulated with hyaluronic acid and seven biomimetic peptides, designed to nourish the scalp, support follicle health and improve hair density.

Delivered directly into the scalp, it helps strengthen weakened follicles, improve hydration and reduce excessive shedding, creating a healthier environment for long-term growth. It is often combined with growth factor therapy, microneedling or polynucleotides as part of a personalised programme.

Polynucleotide Hair Treatments

Polynucleotides are advanced regenerative injectables that support tissue repair, scalp quality and follicle health. By improving the condition of the scalp itself, they help create the right environment for stronger hair growth.

Polynucleotides work well alongside other hair restoration treatments and are particularly useful where the scalp is dry, inflamed or in poor condition.

Minoxidil Therapy

Minoxidil is a clinically proven topical treatment that helps prolong the hair growth phase and improves circulation around the follicles. It is one of the most established treatments for male pattern hair loss.

Used consistently, minoxidil may slow the progression of hair loss, improve density and encourage regrowth in thinning areas. It is often recommended as part of a wider programme and for long-term maintenance.

Your Treatment Journey

What to expect, step by step

Hair restoration is a gradual process. Here is how your programme at Kriniko Medical Aesthetics works, from first assessment to ongoing results.

01

Consultation & scalp analysis

Dr Kris reviews your medical history, examines your scalp with the Dino-Lite hair scanner and identifies your Norwood stage. You'll receive a personalised plan and time to consider it.

02

Your treatment programme

Treatments are delivered as a course, usually spaced several weeks apart. Numbing is used where needed, and most sessions let you return to normal activities the same day.

03

Progress monitoring

Repeat scans compare your hair density against your baseline images. Visible improvement typically builds over three to six months, with maintenance sessions to protect results.

Combination Hair Restoration Programmes

Tailored Programmes for Stronger, Fuller-Looking Hair

Hair loss rarely has a single cause, so combining treatments often gives better results than any one treatment alone. Depending on your scalp assessment and Norwood stage, your plan may include:

Growth factor therapy

Standard or advanced protocols to stimulate follicles.

Microneedling

Boosts circulation and treatment absorption.

Polynucleotides

Regenerates and rehydrates the scalp.

Dr. CYJ Hair Filler

Peptide nourishment for weakened follicles.

Topical & home care

Minoxidil and medical-grade products.

Explore the science behind male pattern hair loss
Male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia, is the most common cause of hair loss in men. It is largely genetic and driven by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone made from testosterone. In men with a genetic sensitivity, DHT gradually shrinks the hair follicles on the top and front of the scalp, a process known as miniaturisation. With each hair cycle, the growth phase becomes shorter, and hairs grow back finer, shorter and lighter until some follicles stop producing visible hair altogether. The hair at the back and sides of the scalp is usually resistant to DHT, which is why the classic horseshoe pattern develops. Regenerative treatments work best while follicles are still active, which is why early assessment and treatment matter. Stress, illness, nutrition and scalp health can also contribute to shedding, and these are reviewed at your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Male Hair Loss Questions, Answered

What causes male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is mainly caused by genetics and the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In men with a genetic sensitivity, DHT gradually shrinks hair follicles on the top and front of the scalp, so hairs grow back thinner and weaker with each cycle. Stress, illness, diet and scalp health can also contribute to shedding, and these are all assessed at your consultation.
When should I start hair loss treatment?
As early as possible. Regenerative treatments work best while hair follicles are still active, so starting when you first notice a receding hairline, crown thinning or increased shedding gives you the best chance of preserving and strengthening the hair you have.
How many growth factor hair treatment sessions will I need?
Most men start with an initial course of three to four sessions spaced around four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every six to twelve months. Your exact plan depends on your scalp assessment, Norwood stage and how your hair responds.
When will I see results from hair loss treatment?
Hair grows slowly, so results take time. Many men notice reduced shedding within the first couple of months, with visible improvements in thickness and density typically building over three to six months. Progress is tracked with repeat Dino-Lite scans so you can see measurable change.
Are hair loss injections painful?
Most men find treatment very tolerable. Numbing is used where appropriate to keep you comfortable, and you may feel some pressure or brief stinging. Mild tenderness, redness or swelling of the scalp usually settles within a day or two.
Can treatment regrow hair on completely bald areas?
Regenerative treatments work by stimulating follicles that are still present. They can improve density in thinning areas and help slow further loss, but they cannot restore hair where follicles have been permanently lost. Dr Kris will give you honest guidance and, where appropriate, advise if a surgical opinion may suit you better.
What is the difference between Growth Factor and Advanced Growth Factor Hair Restoration?
Both use growth factors from your own blood. Growth Factor Hair Treatment delivers a concentrated dose of platelets and growth factors, while Advanced Growth Factor Hair Restoration uses a specialised protocol that creates a fibrin-rich concentrate, releasing growth factors more slowly for more sustained follicle stimulation. Dr Kris will recommend the most suitable option for you.
Who is not suitable for male hair loss treatments?
Treatments are only offered to adults aged 18 and over. Some treatments may not be suitable if you have a blood or clotting disorder, take blood-thinning medication, have an active scalp infection, or have certain medical conditions. Your full medical history is reviewed before any treatment is offered.
