Active Acne Treatment Cambridge

Bringing active breakouts under control comes first. These treatments reduce oil, unclog pores, calm inflammation and help prevent new spots forming.

Medical-Grade Skincare

The foundation of effective acne management. A prescribed home routine using proven actives such as salicylic acid, niacinamide, benzoyl peroxide, retinoids and azelaic acid controls oil, reduces congestion, strengthens the skin barrier and helps prevent future breakouts.

Typically 70–90% improvement in mild to moderate acne

LED Light Therapy

Clinically proven wavelengths of light: blue light targets acne-causing bacteria, while red light reduces inflammation and supports healing. Non-invasive, with no downtime.

Typically 60–80% improvement alongside skincare

Chemical Peels

Medical-grade peels, including the Obagi Blue Radiance peel, as well as salicylic, mandelic and glycolic acid peels, exfoliate the skin and accelerate cell turnover to unclog pores, reduce oiliness, fade pigmentation and refine texture.

Typically 60–85% improvement over a course

Once breakouts are settled, collagen-stimulating treatments soften scarring, refine enlarged pores and smooth uneven texture left behind by acne.

Microneedling

Controlled micro-injuries stimulate the skin's own collagen and elastin production, improving acne scars, refining pores and smoothing uneven texture, while enhancing the absorption of active skincare.

Typically 50–80% improvement in scarring after a course

Growth Factor Therapy

Growth factors taken from your own blood are used to accelerate healing and tissue repair, reducing persistent inflammation, stimulating collagen and supporting regeneration of scarred skin.

Your Treatment Journey

What to expect, step by step

Knowing what happens at each stage of your acne treatment helps you feel at ease and set realistic expectations for your skin.

01

Consultation & OBSERV analysis

Dr Kris reviews your medical history and triggers, and your skin is analysed with the OBSERV 520. You'll receive personalised skincare recommendations and a bespoke treatment plan.

02

Your treatment programme

Treatments are carried out as a course, usually starting with breakout control before moving on to scar and texture repair. Most sessions take 30–60 minutes with little or no downtime.

03

Monitoring & maintenance

Your progress is reviewed and re-imaged throughout, with your plan adjusted as your skin changes. Ongoing maintenance helps keep breakouts under control for the long term.

How does acne develop?
Acne develops through five linked stages. First, the sebaceous glands produce too much oil, often triggered by hormones, stress, genetics or lifestyle factors. Second, dead skin cells mix with this oil and become trapped inside the follicle, creating congestion. Third, a bacteria called Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes) multiplies within the blocked pore. Fourth, the body responds with inflammation, causing redness, swelling, tenderness and pus. Finally, persistent inflammation can damage collagen and leave behind post-acne pigmentation or scarring. Effective treatment targets each of these stages, which is why a combination approach usually works best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Acne Treatment Questions, Answered

What causes acne?
Acne develops when hair follicles become blocked with excess oil (sebum) and dead skin cells, allowing a bacteria called Cutibacterium acnes to multiply and trigger inflammation. Hormones, genetics, stress, certain medications and lifestyle factors can all increase oil production and make breakouts more likely. Identifying which factors are driving your acne is the first step in treating it effectively.
Can adult acne be treated?
Yes. Acne is not just a teenage problem, and many adults experience breakouts for the first time in their twenties, thirties or later, often around the jawline and chin. Adult acne responds well to a personalised plan combining medical-grade skincare with in-clinic treatments such as chemical peels and LED light therapy.
How long does acne treatment take to work?
Most patients notice calmer, less inflamed skin within 2 to 6 weeks, with visible control of breakouts at around 6 to 12 weeks. Improvements to acne scarring and texture take longer, typically 3 to 6 months, as new collagen forms gradually. Consistency with your home skincare and ongoing maintenance are key to lasting results.
What is the best treatment for acne scars?
The right treatment depends on the type and depth of scarring. Microneedling, Growth Factor Therapy, polynucleotides and Sunekos all stimulate collagen and support skin repair, and they are often combined for the best outcome. Active acne should be brought under control first, so that new breakouts don't cause further scarring.
Is acne treatment painful and is there downtime?
Most acne treatments are very comfortable. LED light therapy is painless with no downtime, and chemical peels may cause mild tingling followed by some redness or light flaking for a few days. Injectable and microneedling treatments use numbing cream, and any redness or small marks usually settle within 24 to 72 hours.
Can you treat acne on the back and chest?
Yes. Acne can affect the chest, shoulders and back as well as the face, and many of the same treatments, including medical-grade skincare, chemical peels and LED therapy, can be used on the body. Dr Kris will assess all affected areas at your consultation.
How does OBSERV 520 skin analysis help my acne treatment?
The OBSERV 520 uses multi-spectral imaging to look beneath the surface of the skin, revealing hidden congestion, inflammation, oil activity and pigmentation that can't be seen with the naked eye. Repeating the analysis during your treatment allows us to measure and show your progress objectively.
Who is not suitable for in-clinic acne treatments?
Some treatments are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active skin infections or cold sores, or for people with certain medical conditions or allergies. If you are taking or have recently taken isotretinoin (Roaccutane), some treatments such as peels and microneedling may need to be delayed. Your full medical history is reviewed before any treatment is offered.
