Types of Scars We Treat in Cambridge

Scars develop when the skin repairs itself following inflammation, injury, trauma or infection. How a scar looks depends on the depth of the damage, your body's healing response and your individual skin characteristics, which is why identifying your scar type is the first step towards the right treatment.

Ice Pick Scars

Deep, narrow acne scars that extend into the lower layers of the skin. They look like small puncture-like holes and are one of the most challenging acne scars to treat because of their depth.

Boxcar Scars

Broad, shallow depressions with sharply defined edges that create a crater-like appearance. They are commonly seen on the cheeks and temples following inflammatory acne.

Rolling Scars

Wider depressions with soft, sloping edges that create an uneven, wave-like skin texture. They occur when fibrous bands tether the skin downwards.

Post-Acne Erythema (PAE)

Red, pink or purple marks left behind after acne has healed. Although not a true scar, PAE results from inflammation and damage to superficial blood vessels and can persist for several months.

Self-Harm Scars

Scars from past intentional injury to the skin, such as cutting, scratching or burning. They may be flat, raised, pigmented or depressed. Although they often fade, changes in texture can remain visible and may be improved with the treatments below, in a private and non-judgemental setting.

Post-Traumatic & Surgical Scars

Scars that develop after injury, surgery, burns or cuts. They can be flat, raised, pigmented or depressed depending on the extent of tissue damage and your body's healing response.

The Kriniko Difference

Combination Therapy, Tailored to Your Scars

Scarring often responds best to a combination approach. By targeting collagen stimulation, skin regeneration, inflammation and overall skin health together, combination treatments can achieve safer, more effective and longer-lasting improvements in scar appearance.

Scar-specific planning

Your plan is built around the type, depth and severity of your scarring, as well as your skin type and tone, rather than a one-size-fits-all package.

Layered, synergistic treatments

Resurfacing, collagen induction and regenerative injectables work on different layers of the skin, so combining them treats scars more completely than any one alone.

Foundation for lasting results

Medical-grade skincare and LED Light Therapy support healing between sessions, helping you recover well and protect the improvements you've made.

Post-acne marks and superficial acne scarring on the cheek, treated with chemical peels in Cambridge

Skincare, Chemical Peels & LED

Medical-Grade Skincare

Professional skincare forms the foundation of any successful scar treatment programme. Active ingredients such as retinoids, growth factors, peptides, niacinamide and antioxidants support collagen production, improve skin renewal and enhance overall skin quality.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels exfoliate damaged skin cells and stimulate cellular turnover. Over a course of treatments they can improve skin texture, reduce post-acne erythema and soften the appearance of superficial scarring.

LED Light Therapy

LED Light Therapy helps reduce inflammation, accelerate healing and support skin regeneration. It is particularly beneficial alongside other scar treatments to optimise recovery and improve outcomes.

Microneedling with Exosomes & PRP

Microneedling with Exosomes

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries within the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production. Combined with exosomes, the skin receives powerful regenerative growth factors that accelerate healing, refine texture and reduce the appearance of acne scars and uneven skin surface.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP uses your body's own growth factors to promote tissue repair and regeneration. Often combined with microneedling, PRP helps stimulate collagen, accelerate healing and improve the appearance of acne and post-traumatic scars.

Polynucleotides & Sunekos®

Polynucleotides

Polynucleotides support tissue repair and skin regeneration at a cellular level. They improve skin quality, hydration, elasticity and healing capacity, making them an excellent adjunctive treatment for scar management.

Sunekos®

Sunekos® combines amino acids and hyaluronic acid to stimulate fibroblast activity and encourage the production of collagen and elastin, improving texture, elasticity and overall skin quality in scarred areas.

Your Treatment Journey

What to expect, step by step

Knowing what happens before, during and after your scar treatment helps you feel at ease and set realistic expectations.

01

Medical consultation

Dr Kris reviews your medical history, examines your scars and discusses your goals in a private setting. You'll receive a clear, personalised treatment plan and time to consider it before going ahead.

02

Your treatment course

Most scars improve best over a course of sessions spaced a few weeks apart, often combining treatments. Numbing cream is used where needed to keep you comfortable.

03

Aftercare & review

Mild redness or sensitivity usually settles within a few days. You'll receive a tailored skincare and sun-protection routine, with regular reviews to track progress and adjust your plan.

Scar Treatment Results

Smoother Texture, More Even Skin

Improvement builds gradually as new collagen forms, with results continuing to develop for several months after a course. Scars can be significantly improved, though not always fully erased.

Softer acne scars

Depressed scars lifted and less visible.

Reduced redness

Post-acne marks fade and calm down.

Refined texture

A smoother, more even skin surface.

Blended scars

Body scars sit more naturally with skin.

Healthier skin

Better hydration, elasticity and glow.

How do scar treatments work?
When skin is injured, the body repairs it with collagen, but this new collagen is laid down less evenly than normal skin. Depending on how the wound healed, the result can be a depressed scar (such as ice pick, boxcar and rolling acne scars), a raised or flat scar, or lingering redness and pigmentation. Scar treatments work by encouraging the skin to remodel this tissue. Resurfacing treatments such as chemical peels remove damaged surface cells and speed up renewal; microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger fresh collagen and elastin; and regenerative treatments such as exosomes, PRP, polynucleotides and Sunekos® supply growth factors and building blocks that support healthier repair. Because different treatments act on different layers of the skin, combining them usually gives the most complete improvement. Suitability is always confirmed at your medical consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Scar Treatment Questions, Answered

What is the best treatment for acne scars?
There is no single best treatment for acne scars, because ice pick, boxcar and rolling scars each sit at different depths and respond to different approaches. Most patients see the best improvement from a combination plan, for example microneedling with exosomes or PRP to stimulate collagen, chemical peels to refine the surface, and medical-grade skincare to support results. Dr Kris will assess your scars and recommend the right combination for your skin.
How many scar treatment sessions will I need?
Most patients need a course of treatments rather than a single session. Collagen-stimulating treatments such as microneedling are usually repeated several times, spaced a few weeks apart, and improvement continues to build for months afterwards. The number of sessions depends on the type, depth and age of your scars, and Dr Kris will give you a clear estimate at your consultation.
Can scars be completely removed?
Scars can be significantly softened, but they can rarely be erased completely. The aim of treatment is to improve texture, depth and colour so that scars blend more naturally with the surrounding skin. Dr Kris will talk you through realistic expectations for your scars before you begin.
Can you treat self-harm scars?
Yes. We treat fully healed self-harm scars with compassion and complete discretion, in a private and non-judgemental setting. Treatments such as microneedling, PRP, polynucleotides and Sunekos can improve texture, colour and how well the scars blend with surrounding skin. If you are currently struggling with self-harm, please speak to your GP, or you can call Samaritans free at any time on 116 123.
Do scar treatments hurt?
Most patients find scar treatments very manageable. Numbing cream is applied before treatments such as microneedling and PRP, and you may feel some warmth, tingling or pressure. Chemical peels can cause a mild stinging sensation that settles quickly, while LED Light Therapy is completely painless.
Is there any downtime after scar treatment?
Downtime is usually minimal. After microneedling or PRP, skin may look pink and feel slightly tight for 24 to 72 hours, similar to mild sunburn. Some peels cause light flaking for a few days. You'll receive tailored aftercare advice, including daily sun protection, to help your skin heal well.
Can scar treatments be used on darker skin tones?
Yes. Many scar treatments, including microneedling, polynucleotides, PRP and carefully selected chemical peels, can be used safely on all skin types when planned by an experienced practitioner. Dr Kris takes your skin type into account to minimise the risk of pigmentation changes.
Who is not suitable for scar treatment?
Scar treatments are offered to adults aged 18 and over. Treatment may not be suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, where there is active infection or inflamed acne in the area, or with certain skin conditions, bleeding disorders or medications. Scars need to be fully healed before treatment, and your full medical history is reviewed before any treatment is offered.
