Meet Dr Kris: Your Cambridge Pigmentation Doctor

BSc (Hons) MBBS PgDip MSc RCPathME MRSB MIoL MIHSCM PVRA

Dr Kris brings more than 12 years of clinical experience to every pigmentation treatment at Kriniko Medical Aesthetics. Pigmentation is a medical skin concern as much as a cosmetic one, and a doctor's diagnosis is the key to choosing a treatment that fades dark marks without triggering more.

  • A medical understanding of how melanin is produced, and how sun exposure, hormones, inflammation and skin type influence it, so treatment targets the cause rather than just the surface.
  • Advanced training in skin science and corneotherapy, with a focus on protecting and strengthening the skin barrier while pigmentation is corrected.
  • Every patient has a face-to-face medical consultation with Dr Kris before treatment, and any mark that looks unusual is assessed and referred for further checks where appropriate.

See Hidden Pigmentation with OBSERV 520 Skin Analysis

520 multi-spectral imaging of both surface and deeper skin layers
  • Hidden sun damage: UV imaging reveals pigmentation beneath the surface before it becomes visible to the naked eye.
  • Depth and type: helps distinguish surface pigmentation from deeper patches, which guides the right choice of treatment.
  • Redness versus pigment: separates inflammation from true pigmentation, so treatment isn't aimed at the wrong target.
  • Proof of progress: repeat imaging lets us demonstrate how your skin tone is improving at every stage of your plan.

The Kriniko Difference

Diagnose First, Then Correct and Protect

Pigmentation is rarely solved by a single treatment. The wrong approach can even make it darker, especially with melasma. Dr Kris builds a layered plan that diagnoses the cause, corrects existing pigment and protects your skin from further change.

Accurate diagnosis

Your skin is examined in person and with OBSERV 520 imaging, so the type, depth and triggers of your pigmentation are understood before any treatment begins.

Gentle, controlled correction

Clinic treatments such as medical-grade chemical peels and microneedling are carefully selected and paced to lift pigment without provoking inflammation or rebound darkening.

Long-term protection

A prescribed home routine with pigment-regulating actives, barrier support and daily broad-spectrum SPF helps maintain your results and reduce recurrence.

Sun Spot & Age Spot Treatment Cambridge

Years of UV exposure cause melanin to cluster in certain areas, creating sun spots, age spots and a blotchy, uneven tone on the face, neck, chest and hands. These marks tend to sit closer to the surface and often respond well to a structured course of treatment.

Dr Kris typically combines medical-grade chemical peels, such as the Obagi Blue Peel RADIANCE, to exfoliate and lift surface pigment, with microneedling to renew the skin and a targeted home routine to fade spots and brighten the complexion. Any mark that has changed in size, shape or colour is checked before treatment.

Melasma Treatment Cambridge

Melasma appears as symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches, commonly on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and chin. It is linked to hormonal changes, including pregnancy and the contraceptive pill, and is made worse by sun and visible light. Because it can sit deep in the skin and is easily aggravated, it needs a particularly careful approach.

Melasma can't be permanently cured, but it can be significantly improved and kept under control. Dr Kris uses gentle, non-inflammatory treatments, including carefully chosen peels, a pigment-regulating skincare programme and strict daily protection, avoiding aggressive heat-based approaches that can cause rebound darkening.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation Treatment

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is the dark mark left behind after the skin has been inflamed or injured, most often by acne, but also by eczema, insect bites, grazes or overly harsh treatments. It is more common and longer-lasting in medium and darker skin tones.

Treatment starts by calming any ongoing inflammation, such as active breakouts, so new marks stop forming. Dr Kris then fades existing marks with gentle peels, microneedling and a targeted skincare plan, with regenerative treatments to strengthen and repair the skin where needed.

Your Treatment Journey

What to expect, step by step

Knowing what happens before, during and after your pigmentation treatment helps you feel at ease and set realistic expectations.

01

Consultation & OBSERV analysis

Dr Kris reviews your medical history, skin type and triggers, and maps your pigmentation with OBSERV 520 imaging. You'll receive a clear, personalised plan and time to consider it.

02

Skin preparation & treatment

Your skin is often prepared with a home routine for a few weeks first, which improves results and lowers the risk of irritation. In-clinic treatments are then delivered as a course, spaced several weeks apart.

03

Aftercare & maintenance

Mild redness, dryness or light peeling can follow treatment. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is essential. Progress is reviewed and re-imaged, with a maintenance plan to keep pigmentation under control.

Pigmentation Treatment Results

Clearer, Brighter, More Even Skin

Pigmentation fades gradually as treated skin renews. Many patients notice a brighter complexion within weeks, with more significant improvement over a course of three to six months.

Faded sun spots

Age and sun spots visibly lighter.

Calmer melasma

Patches softened and kept under control.

Fewer dark marks

Post-acne marks fade more quickly.

Even skin tone

A clearer, more uniform complexion.

Renewed radiance

Brighter, healthier-looking skin.

What causes pigmentation?
Skin colour comes from melanin, a pigment made by cells called melanocytes. Pigmentation problems develop when these cells produce too much melanin in certain areas, or when melanin is deposited unevenly. The main triggers are ultraviolet and visible light, hormonal changes (the driver behind melasma), and inflammation or injury to the skin, such as acne, which can leave post-inflammatory marks. Genetics and skin type also play a part, and medium to darker skin tones are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Pigment can sit in the upper layer of the skin (the epidermis), deeper in the dermis, or in both, and deeper pigment usually takes longer to improve. Effective treatment slows excess melanin production, removes pigment that has already formed, and protects the skin from new triggers, which is why a combination approach and daily SPF usually give the best results. Suitability is always confirmed at your medical consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Pigmentation Treatment Questions, Answered

What is the best treatment for pigmentation?
There isn't a single best treatment, because the right choice depends on the type and depth of your pigmentation and your skin type. Sun spots often respond well to chemical peels and microneedling, melasma needs a gentle, non-inflammatory approach with pigment-regulating skincare, and post-acne marks improve once inflammation is controlled. Dr Kris diagnoses your pigmentation with OBSERV 520 skin analysis before recommending a personalised plan.
How many pigmentation treatments will I need?
Most patients benefit from a course of three to six in-clinic treatments, spaced several weeks apart, alongside a daily home skincare routine. Surface pigmentation such as sun spots may improve more quickly, while deeper pigmentation and melasma usually take longer. Your plan and expected timeline are discussed at your consultation.
Can melasma be cured?
Melasma can't be permanently cured, as it is influenced by hormones and light exposure, but it can be significantly lightened and kept under control. Consistent sun protection, a pigment-regulating skincare routine and gentle maintenance treatments are the most effective way to manage it long term.
Is pigmentation treatment suitable for darker skin tones?
Yes, with the right approach. Darker skin tones are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, so treatments must be chosen and paced carefully to avoid irritation. Dr Kris tailors every plan to your skin type and often prepares the skin with a home routine first to reduce the risk of further pigmentation.
Does pigmentation treatment hurt?
Most treatments are very comfortable. Chemical peels can cause a warm, tingling sensation for a few minutes, and numbing cream is applied before microneedling. Any mild redness or sensitivity usually settles within a day or two.
Is there any downtime after pigmentation treatment?
Downtime is usually minimal. You may notice redness, dryness or light flaking for a few days as the skin renews, depending on the treatment. Most people return to work straight away, but you must avoid direct sun and wear a broad-spectrum SPF every day.
Will my pigmentation come back?
Pigmentation can return if the skin is exposed to its triggers, particularly the sun and, for melasma, hormonal changes. Daily broad-spectrum SPF, a maintenance skincare routine and occasional top-up treatments help keep your results for longer.
Who is not suitable for pigmentation treatment?
Pigmentation treatments are only offered to adults aged 18 and over. Some treatments aren't suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active skin infection or cold sores, recent significant sun exposure or tanning, or while taking certain medications such as isotretinoin. Any mark that has changed in size, shape or colour is assessed first and referred for further checks if needed, so your full medical history is reviewed before any treatment is offered.
